Great Photographers Pt 2

Make a new blog post with a biography of that person.
Important information that should be included: name, birth (and maybe death) dates, origin of birth, education, jobs, books published, etc.

Name: Yousuf Karsh

Birth: December 23, 1908 in Mardin, Ottoman Empire (Turkey)

Karsh is an Armenian-Canadian photographer.
Karsh grew up with Armenian parents, during the Armenian Genocide. Persecuted, he and his family fled to Aleppo, Syria. His family later sent him to Canada, where he learned photography from his uncle, a photographer, in Sherbrooke, Quebec. From 1928 to 1931, he served as an apprentice to John H. Garo, a portrait photographer who taught Karsh how to utilize dynamic lighting.

In 1932, Karsh set a portrait studio in Ottowa, Canada.

He also was a member of the Ottowa Little Theatre, in which he met his first wife, Solange Gauthier.

Karsh reached initial success by catching the attention of Mackenzie King, the Prime Minister of Canada. Afterwards, King helped Karsh by setting up appointments for Karsh to photograph foreign dignitaries (high rank people) visiting the country.

Karsh greatly rose to international fame when Winston Churchill visited Ottowa in 1941. Instructed by Mackenzie King, Karsh took the famous photo of Churchill (pretty much seen everywhere today).

From then on, Karsh photographed many of the world’s famous, influential people, including Albert Einstein, Pope John XXIII, Queen Elizabeth, Pablo Picasso, Helen Keller, and Ernest Hemmingway.
