American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?
A Hug Farewell is probably the most impactful photo because it shows the turning point of Ian Fischer's life. From the photo, almost anyone can tell that this is shift between Fischer's ordinary life into a military adventure full of uncertainty. The majority of the photos after A Hug Farewell show Fischer in military training, a military mission, or simply in military uniform, further supporting the fact that after leaving home, shown in A Hug Farewell, Fischer's life is forever changed, making A Hug Farewell an photo showing the life Fischer will leave behind.
B. How do the images work together to tell a story?

They show the progression of Fisher's military life, showing events that express several emotions.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
They tell the context behind the picture, mentioning people's names, explaining what's happening in the photo and why that's happening.
D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.

Ian Fischer enlists in the Army, and suffers the harsh life of military training. He begins developing skills during basic training, and overtime finishes training, able to begin drill practice. Soon, Fischer begins doing military missions, running into obstacles such as drug issues and a breakup with his girlfriend.  Afterwards, Fischer and his platoon departs to Iraq, where Fischer's year-long deployment begins. When his time in Iraq is finished, Fischer goes back to his family and applies for a marriage license with his new girlfriend, finally done with military.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
Present tense.
F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average?
~2-3. At most 5.
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
The first sentence provides a description of what's happening in the photo, including the place and/or time of the event.
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
They provide the background of the event or action shown in the photo, explaining info that happened beforehand, the current issue,  or explaining the results of the action shown in the photo.
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?
It usually provides a quote from one of the subjects in the photo or from a person related to the main subject.
5. Do any captions include a quote?
Yes.
6. Are there any that have four sentences?
Yes, some have 5.
G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?

It is possible because photos can easily tell certain events that happen visually, and the captions help support the photo with specific context. Thus, a collection of photos and captions can tell a person's story by showing several events in their life, like a children's storybook.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?

A story with just photos and captions, while captivating, only tells the highlights of a person's life. Writing a story tells the complete story and dilemmas a person had during their life, and also tells the dilemmas other people related to the person had (which was hardly described in the photos).
