Fetus, 18 weeks

Fetus 18 weeks, Lennart Nilsson

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye?

I picked this image because I saw a photo of a fetus taken in 1965, which shocked me since this photo looked like it was taken today. I am amazed on how sharp and clear this image is.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo.
LIFE magazine posts images of fetuses towards the public, the first time a developing fetus was shown to the public. All but one of the fetuses pictured were photographed outside the womb and were aborted, and Nilsson used special equipment and permission from the hospital to shoot these photos.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo.

Nilsson has taken many photos of fetuses, shown in1 965 LIFE magazine, which sold in popularity.

4. Look up the photographer. Post this famous image of theirs PLUS one more of theirs that catches your eye. (2 photos)

Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors, Donna Ferrato

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye?

I picked this image because I didn't expect actual domestic violence to be easily taken by a photo. What caught my eye was not just the slap shown in the photo, but also the photographer hidden behind the scene, shown in the mirror.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo.

Donna Ferrato managed to take a photo of Garth beating his wife Lisa, an act of domestic abuse. This was a part of Ferrato's Living With the Enemy, where she photographs and informs the public about domestic violence towards women.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo.

Her work helped bring violence against women out of the shadows and forced policymakers to confront the issue. In 1994, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act, increasing penalties against offenders and enforcing domestic abuse as a serious crime.

The couple's real names are Elizabeth and Bengt.

Gandhi and the Spinning Wheel
Gandhi and the Spinning Wheel, Margaret Bourke-White

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye?
I picked this image because it was very out-of-context, in which I could not understand (before reading the context) the correlation between Gandhi and a spinning wheel that looks more like an ornament. What caught my eye is Gandhi calmly sitting and the wheel, both looking very unrelated to each other (which surprisingly works in attracting attention).

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo.

When the British held Gandhi prisoner at Yeravda prison in Pune, India, from 1932 to 1933, he spent his time making his own thread with a charkha,  the portable spinning wheel. Later, this practice turned into an nationalist symbol, as Gandhi encourage his people to be independent and make their own homespun cloth instead of buying British goods.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo.

Bourke-White’s picture of Gandhi reading the news alongside his charkha never appeared in the article she shot for, but less than two years later LIFE magazine featured the photo after Gandhi’s assassination.

Hitler at a Nazi Party Rally

Hitler at a Nazi Party Rally, Heinrich Hoffmann

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye?
I picked this photo because I saw pattern and repetition and amazing leading lines towards Hitler, which expresses the powerful reign Hitler had. What caught my eye was the swastika signs, each lined up with each other and "getting smaller" further downward.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo.

Heinrich Hoffman was Hitler's personal photographer and was instructed to take powerful, grand photos of Hitler's regime as propaganda to the Germans, who were humiliated by the result of WW1. He takes this photo during the Bückeberg Harvest Festival, and successfully captures influential propaganda supporting the Nazi regime.

3. Every photo has some additional information, links, readings, or videos associated. Please tell me what you learned in addition to the actual photo.

Hoffman has taken many pictures of Hitler, some of the photos make Hitler look like an ordinary, happy person in contrast to his actual figure.

4. Look up the photographer. Post this famous image of theirs PLUS one more of theirs that catches your eye. (2 photos)

Fire Escape Collapse

Fire Escape Collapse, Stanley Forman

1. Why did you pick this image? What caught your eye?
I picked this image because it was very shocking to see two individuals falling to their deaths in a photo. What caught my attention is the terrified expression of the child above the woman as both of them fall.

2. Summarize what you read. How about 2-3 sentences explaining the photo.

Stanley Forman gets a call about a fire on Marlborough Street, and goes to take usual photos of the routine rescue. Suddenly, the fire escape breaks, and Stanley Forman now is taking photos two victims falling to their deaths. The child, Tiara, survives, cushioned by the death of the woman, Diana Bryant, and Forman's photo of a local tragedy fills the local news.

Forman's picture is a case study in the debate over whether disturbing images should be worth sharing.
