Phobia Project

1. What is a Phobia?

An extreme, possibly irrational fear of something or some action.

B. List and define 5 phobias from The Phobia List: http://phobialist.com

Erythrophobia or Erytophobia or Ereuthophobia- 1) Fear of redlights. 2) Blushing. 3) Red.

Spacephobia- Fear of outer space.

Scriptophobia- Fear of writing in public.

Insectophobia - Fear of insects.

Enetophobia- Fear of pins.

C. Brainstorm on your blog possible ideas for your Phobia photo.

Things to consider:

Figure(s) & Object(s) (which should reveal something of the phobia in the photo)
Format: horizontal vs Vertical
Subject Placement: Rule of Thirds, balance, ???
Background - what will be behind your subjects?
Point of View - where you place the camera, and what perspective do you want your viewers to see?
Lighting: create mood/feeling
Clothing: can suggest personal style/career profession
Subject: mannerism, reactions, expressions and body language

Plan three different shoots with three different phobias. What will you shoot, who will model, how will you show the phobia in the photo, where will you shoot these images? Please detail this out in a paragraph for each phobia (remember you will shoot and turn in three photos).

1st: Chronophobia- Fear of time

The main cause with fear of time is because one fears or losing time : fearing a calamity, their death, or unable to complete something at a certain time.

Maybe have multiple watches, clocks on subject

Reaching deadlines can cause a fear of time:

Have a stack of paper acting as assignments on your desk acting as a prop. Position yourself to look like you are working on completing these assignments.  On the top right(?), have a clock showing the time 10: 55am, and a tape or message clearly stating the deadline/completion of all the assignments done at 11am.

The lighting (if possible) should have a dim background and the clock clearly highlighted. Propping a lamp next to or shining the clock while turning off all other lights in the room should do the trick. Another light source on the stacks of assignment and work should be done as well.

The subject (me) should clearly have the body working on assignments while head (eyes) aimed at looking at the clock.

(Using a mirror positioned on a desk showing the reflection of the clock would be amazing)

Emotions and tone should be the feeling of rush, stress, or of time unusually quickly passing by.

2nd: Xyrophobia-Fear of razors.

Causes: Usually one hears of a friend or parent cutting themselves badly to where they bleed or even were infected. Watching TV of this can also cause fear.

Symptoms: Growing out your hair/ beard, parts that need to be shaved are overgrown.

Have a razor in a dim room, a nightlight illuminating the razor. Find a prop that represents blood??? (pomegranate??) to infer that the razor has cut open skin.  Perhaps  (camera on tripod) show arms holding the razor all bloody??

Idea is razor looks like a bloody weapon..

Alt: Find a fur material, or hair and glue it to arms (or face). Have a small patch of arm or face bare with skin, but painted red or reddened to signify a razor cutting too deep into the arm.

Idea is razor looks like  it went too deep or damaged the skin.

3rd: Cyberphobia- Fear of computers or working on a computer

Causes can be "due to a lack of comfort and knowledge of computer technology"

Use a computer and show some software or alert clearly requiring user's interaction with fixing the problem. (an image/ photo of a major alert or error can be uploaded and shown on the computer screen)

The background should be dim, with the computer screen clearly brightening the room.

Dim lighting, using a laptop, tripod camera, subject me

Alt: One of the symptoms of this fear is hardly using the computer:

Partially closing the computer while there is a glitch/alert/error/etc. while a sillouette is clearly ignoring the computer can work.

Tone: Ignorance, overload ( ex ads everywhere), dullness.

D. What photographic techniques can you use to help highlight your images? Come up with one idea for each of your three photos you will take.

1:Using rule of thirds aiming at clocks, framing if I am using a mirror. Dynamic lighting will be used to highlight clocks; making it clear "what the time is".

2: Using assymmetrical balance of the two hairy arms (or the two sides of the face), one side hairy, the other bare, red, and  "bloody". Tripod will need the camera to be as horizontal as possible.

3: Dramatic lighting will need to be used: The room should get as dark as possible for the computer screen to visually highlight the computer. LEADING LINES will also help: props such as pencils, paper, straight edges pointed to laptop. If the camera is centered on the computer, balance can also be shown, making the computer the focus.

Below you will find a couple of examples. Some of these are a bit....SQUEAMISH....so be ready.....
