Self Portrait vs Selfie

PART 1 - Self-portrait vs "Selfie"

Now that we have taken some self-portraits, lets take a look at the difference between a self-portrait and so-called "selfie". Is there a difference? Read the following article and tell me what you think! Write at least 3 paragraphs!! Title the new blog post "Self-portrait vs 'Selfie'"

The common consensus in all the article is that the self portrait requires more time, skill, and quality than a selfie, but a selfie is used more often by a wider amount of people due to the reduced time and skill required to shoot a selfie. I did not realize, however, how similar the two styles can be, and that one technically could take a selfie with a advanced camera, or a self-portrait with a phone.
After the readings, I now believe that technology is not what separates a selfie from a self-portrait. It is the time invested and intent of the photo that makes the distinction. The reason why a phone is usually used for a selfie is because it is lighter, smaller, easier to hold and take pictures of oneself than a DSLR camera. The phone is geared towards selfie shots, while professional cameras are geared for professional shots like self portraits.
Realizing that a selfie and self portraits are "styles" based on intent than technology surprised me.
A selfie is more aimed towards fueling social communication and to a social community, whereas a self-portrait is taken with the intention of conveying a deep meaning or theme. As a result, self-portraits usually take more time, more effort to prepare and shoot compared to a selfie, which is more invested towards a response from a group of friends or followers rather than the quality of the actual photo. That is what truly makes the distinction between the two styles.

What is a selfie?

A selfie is when one uses their phone to take a picture of their face, next to an event or person, in an action, or just their face.

What is a self-portrait?
A self-portrait is a photo taken of oneself usually with a professional/advanced camera. More time is usually invested.

Is there a difference? If so, what?
A selfie is more aimed towards fueling social communication and to a social community, whereas a self-portrait is taken with the intention of conveying a deep meaning or theme. As a result, self-portraits usually take more time, more effort to prepare and shoot compared to a selfie, which is more invested towards a response from a group of friends or followers rather than the quality of the actual photo.

What style do you prefer? Why?

I prefer a self-portrait because the style is more professional, "clean", and gives a higher-quality photo than a selfie.

Is one more valuable/important than the other? Why?
Both can be valuable towards the user. A self-portrait is usually a higher-quality photo, with deep or clear themes that can spark audience's interest. But while a selfie may not be as clear or as formal as a self portrait, but it is quicker to take, and will easily record certain events that a user is in, creating social conversations between comrades faster than a self-portrait.

Please also find a school-appropriate "selfie" you have taken and post it on your blog.

As you can see, the intent is greater than the actual quality of the photo in a selfie.
